Your electricity bill, explained.
Short answers to the questions Texas business owners ask us most.
How do I read my commercial electricity bill?+
Most Texas business bills have the same building blocks, even if every provider lays them out differently:
- ESI ID: the long number that identifies your meter. Each meter has its own.
- Billing period and usage: the dates the meter was read and how many kWh you used.
- Energy charge: your rate per kWh times your usage. This is the part you can shop.
- TDSP delivery charges: what the local utility charges to bring power to your building.
- Taxes and fees: sales tax, gross receipts and other line items.
What are TDSP charges, and can I lower them?+
TDSP stands for Transmission and Distribution Service Provider: the utility that owns the poles and wires in your area, such as Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas or TNMP.
Every provider passes those charges through at the same regulated rates, so switching providers does not change them. A fair comparison keeps delivery apart from the energy rate.
Fixed or index: which is right for my business?+
Fixed: one energy rate for the whole term. Easy to budget, protected if prices rise.
Index: your rate follows the wholesale market plus a set adder. It can cost less over time, and it can spike in a hot summer or a winter storm.
Hybrid: part of your usage fixed, part on the market, to soften both sides.
What is a future-dated agreement?+
A new agreement signed today that starts the day your current one ends. It lets you lock in a rate months ahead without paying a cancellation fee on the agreement you have now.
When should I start thinking about my renewal?+
About six months before your agreement ends. That gives you time to watch the market and lock in a future start date when the price is right.
Wait too long and a business often rolls onto a month-to-month or holdover rate, usually well above a negotiated one.
Is there a fee to leave my current agreement early?+
Usually, yes, and every provider calculates it differently: a flat amount, per meter, per month remaining, or based on the energy left on the contract.
Sometimes the savings outweigh the fee. Often a future-dated agreement is better. We work out both before recommending anything.
